Gary Kratochvil has been fascinated with gems and minerals from a very young age. He has a passion for mining and applying his artistry to the treasures he collects as well as just appreciating them in their natural form. Gary cut his first cabochon at the age of 8 and bought his first faceting machine at 17. Today Gary is 64 and his passion for his art is stronger than ever. His most rewarding experiences include mining a gemstone, seeing the finished gem inside the rough and removing everything else from that piece to expose his vision. Gary specializes in precision cutting and strives to make each stone the best he's ever cut and takes pride in his work. Gary has been fortunate to see many parts of the world in search of lapidary treasures and is always ready for the next adventure.
Oregon sunstone is an amazing gem to mine and work with. The variety of color is stunning and at times decorated internally with beautiful sprays of copper schiller. Combine all of that with the fact that Oregon sunstone is an American mined gemstone it just doesn't get any better for me. I love Oregon sunstone so much that I have interests in mining claims. I have many fond memories of the Oregon High Desert with dear friends and look forward to my next adventures there.
